# What Lance can and can't do

> The exact permissions you give your community's bot, how your key is kept, and how to take access back.

When you connect, you don't hand over your wallet. You approve a separate trading key on Hyperliquid (Hyperliquid calls it an API wallet) that only your community's bot holds.

> **Lance can**
>
> * Place and close the trades you ask for
> * Set take profits and stop losses
> * Change leverage on a market
> * Charge its bot fee, up to the rate you approved

> **Lance can't**
>
> * Withdraw your funds
> * Send funds to another wallet
> * See or use your wallet's own keys or seed phrase
> * Keep trading after you remove access, or after the key expires

## The trading key, in full

Hyperliquid lets an API wallet sign any trading action on your account. Besides trades, that includes moving funds between your own Hyperliquid balances and sub-accounts, or into vaults. It never includes withdrawing or sending funds to another wallet. Your bot only uses its key for the trades and settings you ask for.

## How keys are kept

* **One key per member.** Each member gets their own key, made for them when they connect. A key is never reused: reconnecting, renewing or removing access deletes the old one.
* **Encrypted.** Keys are stored encrypted, and never reach your browser or Lance Trade.
* **Short-lived.** Each key expires after at most 180 days. You renew it with one signature.

## Links tied to you

* An approval link names the Telegram user it's for, and the page shows it before any signature.
* The bot only connects the wallet that signed, and only for a one-time code sent from that same Telegram account. A forwarded link can't connect someone else's wallet to your account.
* Lance Trade sign-in links work once, for 10 minutes, and every new browser is announced in your chat.

## Trades stay private

You trade in a private chat with the bot, or in your own Lance Trade session, never in a group. Nobody can trade for you by posting a command in your community's group.

## Take access back at any time

* In the bot: **🔐 Wallet and access**, then **Remove access**. See [Remove access](https://docs.lancetrade.xyz/account/wallet-and-access.md#remove-access).
* On Hyperliquid: revoke the bot's key yourself, without going through the bot.

> [!WARNING]
>
> No software is free of risk. Use a wallet you're comfortable trading from, keep your seed phrase offline, and only use the [official links](https://docs.lancetrade.xyz/safety/official-links.md).

**Risk warning.** Trading perpetual futures with leverage is high risk. Prices can move fast and you can lose all the money you put in. Lance is software: it does not give investment advice, manage money or trade on anyone's behalf. Trades are executed on Hyperliquid, a third-party exchange that is not affiliated with Lance. Lance is not available to persons in the United States, the United Kingdom and sanctioned countries. Nothing on this site is an offer or solicitation where it would be unlawful.
